Reporting and reconciliation
Find why reports disagree, trace calculations to source records and revise the reporting logic where needed.

Reconcile the records behind a report
We reconcile reports against their source records to explain missing items, timing differences and conflicting calculations. Dates, filters and adjustments are checked against the definition of the metric each report is meant to show.
The findings record expected differences separately from items that still need investigation. If implementation is included, we revise the relevant queries, transformations or settings and check them against an agreed sample.
Reporting issues we examine
- Finance and operations use the same metric name for different calculations.
- Month-end depends on adjustments held in one person's spreadsheet.
- Late records or corrections appear in different reporting periods.
- Nobody owns the rules behind a recurring report.
Reconciling the records
- Agree what the metric counts, its period and the treatment of adjustments.
- Match source records and classify missing, duplicate, timing and calculation differences.
- Investigate unexplained items with the people responsible for the records and definitions.
- Revise the agreed queries, transformations or checks and repeat the reconciliation.
Definitions and repeatable checks
- Metric definitions with source fields, dates and eligibility rules.
- A reconciliation method with a worked sample and unresolved items.
- A record of adjustments, exceptions and who can approve definition changes.
- Revised reporting logic and maintenance instructions when implementation is included.
Accounting responsibilities
This work examines the process and technology behind reporting. It does not provide an audit opinion or certify financial statements. Accounting judgments and statutory requirements remain with the appropriately qualified people.
